As the first month of Environmental Enforcement comes to an end, time to take stock of the situation. The number of Fixed Penalty Notices issued (£100 fines) in the period from 3rd August until 3rd September was 692. The breakdown as follows:
3/8 – 13/8 294 littering/5 dog fouling
14/8 – 20/8 128 littering/4 dog fouling
21/8- 27/8 141 littering/2 dog fouling
28/8 – 3/9 115 littering/3 dog fouling
Interestingly the majority (286) of the littering offences in the first period, 3/8 until 13/8 were for cigarette littering. Quite a staggering number, bearing in mind that the number of smokers in the UK is supposedly in serious decline. In the second period, all of the littering offences were for cigarette littering, all 128! If you are a smoker that is a clear warning that your habit might be about to cost you a lot more than a packet of cigarettes and they are not cheap. So smoking damages your health and indeed wealth. Time to give it up perhaps, or use the litter bins provided.
